What Happens When the Internet Disappears? Understanding Digital Dependency and Business Resilience - Part - 1

1.INTRODUCTION


In today's hyper-connected world, the internet has become the backbone of our daily lives, influencing everything from personal interactions to global business operations.

The part -1 of this blog delves into the critical dependence modern society has on internet connectivity and the far-reaching consequences that arise from any disruptions to this vital resource. We will explore not only the technological aspects but also the implications for business continuity and the overall resilience of organizations in the face of connectivity challenges in upcoming parts.


The internet serves as a crucial link between various components of our lives, including payment systems, cloud applications, communication tools, logistics networks, authentication services, and digital supply chains. When connectivity falters, the effects can be swift and severe, impacting individuals and enterprises alike.


Scenario:

Imagine waking up tomorrow and your phone still works, but the internet doesn't.

Your alarm goes off. You have a mobile signal and can make calls, but WhatsApp will not load. Google Maps is unavailable. Your banking application shows an error. A UPI payment fails. Your cab-booking application cannot find a driver.

You try to check the news; Nothing.

You open your work email; Nothing.

Then you realize something uncomfortable:

The internet hasn't slowed down. It has disappeared.

Initially, it poses a slight disruption.


Then you start asking questions.

And perhaps the most important question:

How much of modern life actually works without the internet?



2.TAIWAN ASKED A VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION


In August 2026, Taiwan incorporated a communications disruption scenario into its annual Han Kuang military exercises.

For around 30 minutes, mobile internet access in Taipei and several other areas was deliberately reduced to 256 Kbps, fast enough for basic text communication, but painfully slow for most modern online services.


The exercise was intended to simulate severely degraded communications during a crisis.

What makes this interesting is that it wasn't simply about military communications.

It was about resilience.

And that raises a question that applies far beyond Taiwan:

What happens to a society that has built almost everything around being connected?


3.THE INTERNET IS NO LONGER JUST "The Internet"


The Internet Is No Longer Just Websites.

When people hear "internet outage," they often imagine websites going offline.

But the internet has become the connective tissue between countless systems.

Payments depend on connectivity.

Cloud applications depend on connectivity.

Businesses communicate through internet-based platforms.

Logistics operations use online tracking and dispatch systems.

Digital supply chains connect organizations with suppliers and customers.

The internet is no longer something we simply use.

For many parts of modern society, it is something we depend on.

And dependency only becomes visible when the thing we depend on disappears.

4.WHAT WOULD ACTUALLY STOP WORKING?


Let's start With Something Simple: Paying for Lunch


Imagine walking into a restaurant.

You finish your meal and reach for your phone.

You scan the QR code; Nothing.

You open your banking application; it won't connect.

You try your card; the terminal cannot reach its payment processor.

Suddenly, something becomes clear:

Having money isn't necessarily enough to make a payment anymore.


You also need the infrastructure that allows the transaction to happen.

This dependency is particularly significant in countries where digital payments have become deeply embedded in everyday commerce.


According to TRAI's annual telecom indicators, India had approximately 969 million internet subscribers and 944 million broadband subscribers as of March 2025.

The scale of digital connectivity is enormous, so is the potential impact of losing it.


Then Think About Getting to Work


Your cab-booking application cannot connect.

Navigation applications cannot update.

Online ticketing may be unavailable.

For an individual, this is frustrating, but for a logistics company, transport operator or emergency service, it can become operationally significant.


The interesting part is that the physical infrastructure hasn't necessarily failed.

The car still works, the road still exists, the driver is still available.

But the digital layer coordinating everything has disappeared.


What About Communication?


Think about how many conversations you have through internet-based services every day.

  • Email.

  • Teams.

  • Zoom.

  • WhatsApp.

  • Cloud collaboration.

  • Document-sharing platforms.

If connectivity disappears, your laptop doesn't necessarily stop working, your phone doesn't necessarily stop working.

But your ability to coordinate with other people may disappear, and that's an important distinction.

The technology can remain available while the ability to use it effectively disappears.


5.THE PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE BEHIND THE INTERNET


The Internet Has Physical Foundations

There's another misconception worth challenging.


The internet feels virtual, but underneath it, are very physical things:

  • Fiber-optic cables

  • Data centers

  • Power infrastructure

  • Telecom towers

  • Routers

  • Submarine cables

Taiwan experienced a real example of this in 2023, when two submarine cables serving the Matsu Islands were damaged, causing significant communications disruption.

The lesson is simple:

Something as intangible as internet access ultimately depends on very tangible infrastructure.


A cable can be damaged.

A data center can lose power.

A telecom tower can become inaccessible.

Then, an option that was once constant, abruptly vanishes.


6.WE HAVE SEEN SOMETHING SIMILAR TO THIS


We've Already Seen What Digital Dependency Looks Like

A complete internet disappearance sounds extreme, but we've already experienced smaller versions of the same problem.

The CrowdStrike Incident


On July 19, 2024, a faulty CrowdStrike Falcon configuration update caused Windows systems around the world to crash.

According to Microsoft, around 8.5 million Windows machines felt the impact.

The disruption reached sectors including aviation, healthcare, banking and retail.

And importantly, it wasn't a cyberattack, it was a technology failure.

That's an important lesson for resilience planning

The event that causes disruption doesn't always have to be a hacker.


It can be:

Human error → software failure → infrastructure disruption → business impact.

The cause changes, the need for resilience doesn't.

7.The Bigger Question


Imagine removing internet connectivity for just 24 hours.

Not electricity, not computers.

Just connectivity.

How many things would continue normally?

How many would become slower?

How many would require manual work?

And how many would simply stop?


That thought experiment reveals something important.

The internet isn't just a convenience anymore; it has become a dependency.

And once something becomes a dependency, it becomes a risk consideration.


That is when things take an unexpected turn.

Because the biggest consequences may not happen to individuals.

They may happen to businesses.
