Pests Are Small, But Their Impacts To Businesses Aren’t!

"Centre for Economic Business Research (CEBR UK) has estimated that in 2014 alone, disruptions caused by pest infestations resulted in an increase of £5.8 billion in operating costs in the countries surveyed."

Damage from pests goes beyond just the visible financial losses. Businesses have faced legal and reputational losses too because of pests. Well, be honest! Would you eat at your most favorite restaurant when you have just seen a rat on the food counter? In the age of the social media, that news would spread like wild fire.

Is the IT/ITES industry spared? Well, pests have struck there also. Every industry is at the risk of pest damages.

The risk of infestation is very real, wherever in the world you are. Pests do not discriminate; they affect the IT, hospitality, process industries, tourism industries, fashion outlets, storage units, professional services and even farm lands. Rats are known to gnaw at cables causing loss of communication thereby loss in productivity. In more serious cases, your IT systems might be just fine, however pests carry diseases that may expose employees to harmful viruses and bacteria.

There have been multiple instances of damages caused by the pests. Some of them are given below for your reference.

  2. Read about snakes causing power outages for more than 10,000 homes here.

  3. PMC employees run for cover from office, why? Read about it here.

So what should we do?

When it comes to pest, being reactive would always be your loss. A proactive and diligent pest control program will save the organization tons of money. ‘Prevention is better than cure’ is very true in this case.

Pest control recommendations

  • Ensure pest proof doors, windows, ducts etc. in order to prevent entry into critical business areas

  • Restrict food and beverages in critical rooms, spillages and or wastages can attract vermin

  • Deploy humane pest control solutions and monitor for pest activities

  • Monitor the pest control solutions.

Most pesticides lose their efficacy after a few years, it's not that the pesticides are becoming weaker, rather the pests are becoming resilient against the pesticides. If pests can become resilient why can we?
