Covid-19: Are We Heading For 4th Wave?

"We are stronger and better prepared now because we have learnt the lessons!"

The pandemic has shown that the humans are not infallible and we need to be prepared as communities rather than as individuals to reduce the impact of the pandemic. Government policies matter, however individual compliance to the protocols matter more. This difference was seen in various quarters. Where people complied with the protocols, the infection rate was less and where it wasn’t followed the rates were higher.

The pandemic forced almost everything to come to your home, including kids attending school at home and even the elderly ordering groceries home. Schools are the true fulcrum of a functioning society. We learnt how to keep the schools going in spite of the high infection rates. We will keep them going if and when there is a 4th wave too.

Many countries, including some thought to have strong response capabilities, failed to detect or respond decisively to the early signs of SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks. That meant they started to fight the virus’s spread after transmission was well established. In the 4th wave we will need to nip it in the budding stage itself. The previous 3 waves have taught us well. If we play our cards well this time, we can ensure that the pandemic is kept at bay and also make a stronger business community.

We feel that the most essential lesson we have learnt from COVID-19 is that pandemic control hinges on rapid, effective, coordinated and sustained pandemic response at local, national and international levels.

This Wave 4, let's deploy the following learnings from the previous waves:

  1. Masks have worked when effectively worn. So, put your masks ON.

  2. Vaccinate – get your booster dozes as recommended and wherever available

  3. Take mental health seriously – with a lot of alone time forecasted, keep your mental health at top shape

  4. Essentials – keep essentials stocked at home. DO NOT OVERSHOP!

  5. Hygiene – practice basic hygiene. YES, basic hygiene is enough.

Incorporate pandemic response measures at your offices too. Protect your organization, get your organization to stay aware. Awareness is key.
