"When you are happy that its raining, then life gives you a power cut!" – Anurag Kola

Sometimes, a power outage is good and comes with its own advantage. You can enjoy a candle light dinner with your loved ones. You will definitely love the experience.

But when there are power outages (especially extended ones), you wouldn't love it because it impacts not only your businesses but the whole community; in fact it has the potential to impact the whole economy. As per U.S. Department of Energy, the cost of power outages to small businesses amounts to a huge sum of USD 150 Billion each year.

Power outages are still happening and continues to be one of the major reasons for business disruptions. They are still very prevalent.

On Sunday, 27th February 2022, residents of Mumbai woke up to no electricity owing to a massive power outage witnessed across Mumbai due to a grid failure that also affected the city's lifeline – the local train services. Understanding the impact of this outage to the whole city, a high-level inquiry has been ordered.

The major impacts from power outages include:

  1. Communication disruption

  2. water shortages

  3. Food and water contamination due to lack of cooling air

  4. Failure to use critical medical devices and facilities leading to fatalities

Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Department of Homeland Security has framed some great points for being prepared for power outage. Refer this document here.

When we were kids we used to play in dark rooms or hide and seek during power cuts; but the kids these days are searching for their power banks for continuity of their own entertainment.

Think about this!
